A collectors passion...Anvils.

As I have mentioned before one of the loveliest things I find about what we do is being able to share in the collections of our customers. I get true excitement when I find an item I know, will in turn, bring joy to a collector. Some of these collectors I have never met and live many, many miles away.
Such is the case with collector Lincoln Wolfe who collects small anvils. An anvil is a basic tool. In the simplest terms it is a block with a hard surface on which another object is struck. The inertia of the anvil allows the energy of the striking tool to be transferred to the work piece. In most cases the anvil is used as a forging tool. Before the advent of modern welding technology, it was a primary tool of metal workers. From memory I think Lincoln has purchased a couple directly from me but also, every now and then I get a lovely email from Lincoln asking me to help ship a new little anvil he has tracked down through ebay to his United States home. This is for two reasons, firstly some sellers do not like to mail out of Australia and also anvils look deceivingly easy to properly package. Due to their incredible weight they need to be firmly packed in several boxes using very hard cardboard and a massive amount of heavy duty tape. The seller mails them to me and then I repack and send them on. Lincoln has kindly set me these pictures of some of his collection...I must say I just love the old work bench he uses as a desk and it is perfect for displaying part of his collection.
His puss cat, one of many, obviously finds them a good spot to survey the room. My thanks to Lincoln for sending me these pictures to share with you.

  1. Hi Katherine, I have seen these over the years and alway wondered what they were. Thanks for educating me.
Collections are so individual arent they? I love looking at what other people collect, it fascinates me as there is alway an amazing story behind it all.
    Have a fun day!

  8. Hey Katherine
There is a scene in the Gilmore Girls where Lorelai says.. 'I wonder where all the anvils went'.... Now I know!!

I like the fact that it is 'inertia' that makes it useful... sounds like me at the moment... and my internet.. although in that case it doesn't apply!! hahaha

    Great collection.. xxx Julie
