Is that an eye ?
Is that a head ?
Oh its a squirrel
I used an old millinery mannequin to model this rather skinny chap. He was given to the lovely elderley lady I met today by her father when she was 21. She is now well into her 80's. She said she loved it and it was all the rage at the dances of her youth. You don't see many squirrel furs...more common are foxes. Furs even vintage ones like this still provoke a lot of discussion. A lot of people feel very strongly about them.

Hmmmmm.... I don't think it is for me... not that I have any ethical issues with it.... I just like to be not scared of my clothes! X
ReplyDeleteSorry. That thing's hideous!
ReplyDeleteScary stuff! Interesting story though.
ReplyDeleteEeeeek!! I kove the story behind it though, I just couldn't imagine draping it around my neck to wear out (or in for that matter!). Cheers x
ReplyDeleteHe he, I love furs, its even more funny when people don't like them! If you ever have any manny heads to sell pls let me know, I always want more.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, not my thing. I'm strickly anti-fur. I even struggle with leather! I like the story though as well as that millinery head. She's cool!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't say it better than Tiff.. hahahaha.. sort of freaks me out.. actually all fur does..
ReplyDeleteBut.. LOVE the 'millinery mannequin' [say that fast 10 times!! haha]
Okey dokey thanks for the smiles.. ciao xxxx Julie
ooooohhhh nooooo i don't like it im afraid makes me feel upset. Im a vegetarian and have been since i was 8 i have strong views on real animals etc but thats my personnal choice. Well done for posting about it though, dee x
ReplyDeleteControversial Katherine! I thought you got a new pet when I first saw that image.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it was a different time when that fur stole was fashionable - one can't get too upset about the poor squirrel now that it's been dead for 60+ years.
I just wonder who would be game to wear it these days. Maybe you at your next bloggers' lunch?? xx
I'm glad that I'm not the only one because I just wanted to say GROSSSS! Why any body would want to wear a dead rodent around their neck is beyond me. But I still love you Katherine. x
ReplyDeleteEven though it's not my thing, seeing this has brought back so many memories of my grandmother. She had a few furs like that and my sister and I used to play with them as kids.
ReplyDeleteOh what a freaky post Katherine! I was wondering what the heck was going on. lol! I like Anitas comment and think you should start a trend... not really. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI like the furs and The squirrel is really different, never saw one before today. judy
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a squashed Zhu Zhu Pet at first. I know it's not the right thing to say, but I love furs. Saw some magnificent garments in Denmark and you can appreciate, with the cold, why they wear them and have done so for many, many years. Not sure if I saw any squirrel though ...
ReplyDeleteCan you hear me screaming over here???
